6 not-so-typical love
songs to celebrate
Valentine’s Day

Who says love can only be romantic? Read on to learn more!

The important person in your life - Your partner, wife or husband.

A strong feeling of friendship or love that unites people.

To really understand someone.

Your health and happiness.

Someone (often a man) who has many lovers.

A face that shows discontent; the opposite of a smile.

To become strongly attracted to someone and start loving them.

There’s no doubt that Valentine’s Day is one of the most special dates of the year. We all try to find the perfect present for our significant other and, above all, we do our best to show them how much we love them! What we tend to forget, however, is that love is not necessarily about couples.

Love is present in many types of relationships in our everyday life and, even though music tends to focus on romance, there are many songs that capture other –equally important– forms of affection. We have compiled a list of songs that will make you reach out to your loved ones to tell them how you feel about them immediately. Hope you like our picks!

Told You So
Artist: Little Mix

Friendship makes the world go round! People may come and go, but our friends stick around even in our darkest times. That’s what Told You So is all about: the singers talk about a heartbroken friend and promise her that they will always be there to support her, no matter what.

Girl, just come 'round mine tonight
I've got wine and make-up wipes
I'll hold you
I'll hold you
We can put the kettle on
Talk 'bout how he's not the one
I told you
But I'm never gonna say I told you so

Everything I wanted
Artist: Billie Eilish

There are few emotions stronger than the bond we share with our siblings. There’s a kind of understanding that can only be forged when you grow up with someone– that person gets you in a way other people simply can’t. Billie Eilish captures this feeling in 'everything I wanted', a song that celebrates her relationship with her brother Finneas.

And you say, "As long as I'm here
No one can hurt you
Don't wanna lie here
But you can learn to
If I could change
The way that you see yourself"

Artist: Spice Girls

There’s nothing like a mother’s love, right? The Spice Girls dedicated an amazingly beautiful song to their mums, apologizing for being irresponsible back in the day and thanking them for always looking out for their wellbeing. They didn’t understand their mums’ ways and opinions but, with a little perspective, they came to see that mums are always there for us.

Back then I didn't know why
Why you were misunderstood
So now I see through your eyes
All that you did was love
Mama I love you
Mama I care
Mama I love you
Mama my friend
You're my friend

Love story
Artist: Katharine McPhee

Most songs about romantic relationships portray love at first sight and feelings so strong and deep they change the lovers forever. This one, though, is way more real: when two good friends fall in love! The singer of this song always said that they were just friends but one day she realises she’s got feelings for him... and that’s part of their love story!

I always made up some excuse
Saying that you weren't my type
Didn't wanna face the truth
Didn't wanna cross that line
'Till one day I saw you
Out the corner of my eye
You were flirting with some girl
And inside I thought I would die

Int’l Players Anthem (I Choose You)
Artist: UGK and Outkast

Hip hop isn’t exactly a genre known for its love songs, but on this track Andre 3000 chooses to leave behind his life as a player to settle down with one woman, despite the protestations of his friends. Over a classic Motown Soul sample, the rapper rhymes about his decision to leave behind his previous life and compares his new journey to that of a spaceship heading into the unknown. The music video is also a classic, with a fantastic chance to see Andre 3000 wearing a kilt to his wedding.

So, I typed a text to a girl I used to see
Saying that I chose this cutie pie with whom I wanna be
And I apologize if this message gets you down
Then I CC'ed every girl that I'd see-see 'round town
And hate to see y'all frown but I'd rather see her smilin'

We’re Going to Be Friends
Artist: The White Stripes

There are a million and one songs written about the feeling of falling for someone, about that moment when you love someone and want to spend your life with them. But not many talk about that same connection at the start of a friendship. This song by The White Stripes contrasts with a lot of their heavier music; it’s sweet and almost naively innocent. It speaks from the perspective of a young boy during his first days at school and the certainty he feels about his relationship with his new friend, Suzy Lee.

Tonight I'll dream, while I'm in bed
When silly thoughts go through my head
About the bugs and alphabet
And when I wake tomorrow, I'll bet
That you and I will walk together again
I can tell that we are going to be friends
